I want to hook my MacBook up to my TV and I found an adaptor that will convey an audio signal between Mini DisplayPort and HDMI only if the source device (my MacBook) supports it. Can I do this or do I need to buy the other, more expensive adaptor?

No. All Apple laptops, going back as far as I can even remember, have video and audio outputs separately. The mini Display Port will do video only. Do get audio out from the MacBook you can either use Stereo Mini (3.5mm TRS) or Digital Optical (Toslink). Both can be plugged into the headphone jack (its actually headphone and optical both).
So for your TV, see what type of audio input it has for the video that you do end up using. Some will use Stereo Mini, some will use RCA stereo, and some might even support Digital Optical. You need to sort that out to figure out which cable you need.
If the TV uses stereo mini, then just get a Stereo Mini cable (also called auxiliary cable, the one people use to hook up an iPod to a car stereo often). If the TV uses RCA Stereo you need a Stereo Mini to RCA cable. And if the TV supports Digital Optical you want a Toslink Cable.
