Help with buying a new Macbook Pro?

I'm going to be picking up a Macbook Pro sometime in the near future and I just have a few questions. The main reason I'm getting one is for at home as a second computer, and for college when i'm at the library or in class.

1. When should I buy one? Right now I can get the 13 inch online for 1159 no tax free shipping. Should I get this or wait till Apple does the student discount with the free ipod touch and I think printer(not sure on the printer) What's the best option.

2. What are some good accessories to buy? I was going to get a hard case, stand, mouse and keyboard. Should I just get the case and wait a few weeks to see if the other stuff is worth the money? Also, is it worth it to get some kind cover for the palm rests and trackpad to keep them clean?

  1. You are asking the right questions. Good for you.

Unless you need it right now I’d either wait for the Apple promotion that they usually have over the summer or check out your college to see if they have any deals. Some colleges have great student prices, though the iPod promotion is pretty good.

I’d also wait to see if you really want to bother with some of the other stuff. A cooling stand may be a good idea if you are going to run it for long periods but do a little research as there are dozens to choose from and it’s a really personal choice. If you tend to have greasy hands you may want some protectors to keep the surface from wear and dirt. On the other hand if you are a neat-freak you won’t need it.

Do get some sort of case. I have a shoulder case for mine and I made my own heavy duty sleeve from very thick and soft material. Looks cool, too.

I also have a bluetooth mouse for mine since I prefer to mouse a lot. But the trackpad on the MBP is really very comprehensive with many gestures and I use the mouse less than I expected.

  2. Apple MacBook Pro MC374LL/A 13.3-Inch Laptop

Review: i just picked one of these up and I love it. I have read reviews complaining that Apple did not try to cram an i5 or larger CPU into this 13 inch machine. True, the chose to use the Core 2 Duo but that’s not all bad. This is a stable, cool running, capable processor. The machine now includes 4 G of ram and a much improved video card from the previous version. I use this mostly for work where stability, battery life, portability, and longevity are the most important things to me. I rarely play games. I wouldn’t use a portable for video work when I have a desktop available. I run office applications, safari, email, ever note, and skype. It all works great. The machine feels substantial in my hands. Pick it up and try to twist it. It is perfectly rigid. My Toshiba feels like the battery would fall out if I twisted a bit more. This one feels well built. I especially like the backlit keyboard.
