How to prepare my MacBook Pro for sale?

I was thinking of selling my 15in macbook pro in order to buy a 17in. I was wondering what should I do to safely sell my macbook. Should I erase the hard drive or what. Also, how will I able to transfer everything i have on my 15in to a 17in? If I have a time machine backup of my 15in, can I install that backup on my new 17in?

  1. leave the hard drive, simply remove your personal data, defrag and clean up, thats it.

  2. Buy the 17" MacBook Pro. When you start it up it will ask you if you want to transfer data from another Mac. Just agree and hook the two together with a firewire cable. The Macs will co-operate and transfer whatever files you want between them. It will take from 1 to 3 hours usually. Then use the MacOS X DVDs that came with your 15" MacBook Pro and erase the hard drive and reinstall a clean version of MacOS X. Then install the applications. All in all it will take you a couple hours.
