I have a macbook and i have noticed every now and then i get software update reminders, I was wondering If they are continuously stored on my HD because it seems like my hard drive space is getting smaller. I would like to erase some updates from the past if they are continuously stacking up on the HD.

Software Update only keeps track of the needed updates until you click to install them. Then it downloads the update file and like you’ve already heard, it overwrites the old version of the software and only the size of the file shown in the Software Update window is added to you hard drive reducing it’s available space. Most likely the single biggest reason you’re losing disk space is other downloads from either iTunes, your web browser, or file transfers you make from an external device. You might really want to consider purchasing an external hard drive which you may use to store multimedia files on. And even if you don’t you can still make good use of Time Machine to back up your MacBook.
when you do your updates they over ride each other…
it’s something else.
no only if you update them and i think it overwrites
You do realize that hard drive space is obsolete nowadays. There is nothing to worry about… 5 years of updates would only be like 1 gig of space.. Computers nowadays have about 500gig space.!
i dont know bout macbooks but i know bout dell laptops the automatically updates maybe i guess
maybe im not to sure. lol
Sup gmac,
Macs overwrite existing update data for most (not all) of their programs when they’re updated. Chances are if you’re noticing a performance deterioration that it’s something else.
Do you restart your computer often? You should, because your system needs time to garbage collect, which is basically your physical memory getting reset. You should also make sure you’re clearing out your internet cache, most systems have it default to save up to a month’s worth of data (and, if you’re like me, that’s a lot of data!).
If you keep having issues you should schedule a free Genius checkup at your closest mac store. You can do it at apple.com.
G’luck
The updates remain on Apple’s servers untill you choose to download them. If your hard drive space is getting smaller and smaller that is because you are continually adding music files, video and word docs and other stuff to it each day when you use it.
You can use an app cally Onyx if you want to do some hard drive maintenance although with the HFS+ file system that Apple currrently uses that tends to be unnecessary most of the time.
