I am planning on buying a new laptop. My present laptop is an acer aspire 5228 5630. This computer was a nightmare since I bought it without much research> i bought it about 2.5 years ago. The battery stopped charging about 1.5 years ago (even before that it barely lasted an hour). Ive been through 2 chargers (random universal charging adaptors, since acer's customer service is awful and they dont even supply accessories for their own products). Also, this laptop overheats very very quickly for no reason and then shuts off.
Considering all this, I am basically planning o buying a notebook that will last a while (5 years?). Im not into gaming and i need it mostly for home use. I just use my computer for college work, internet browsing, youtube etc. i do care about battery life but not as much (3 hours is fine) I was thinking of buying a macbook or a thinkpad as ive heard alot of good things about them. however i cant decide since apple fans just suggest apple blindly without reason. and im not sure which thinkpad model would be best. Any suggestions?? and please let me know WHY one is better than the other.

This is something of an Apples (pun intended) to oranges question. Apple computers are decent though pricey and they do have a nice look to them, however the GUI itself is pretty much a hack of GNOME. Thinkpads are great laptops, I used to own a T-23 until a faulty AC adaptor (3rd party) killed it off.
So, it really comes down to what you want out of your laptop. If you want style and don’t care about cash then go ahead and buy the Apple. If you do care about cash pick up the Thinkpad or, IMHO even better, a Toshiba Satellite. If you really really like the look of the Apple OS, but want to go with the Thinkpad, then just install Ubuntu and all your software will be free (and frequently updated).
get a thinkpad. their design is so much cooler and they have fingerprint scanners, face scanners, voice activation and other cool gadgets. for some reason i like thinkpad’s basic style. its just square, no curve s or nothing and it has that classic ball in the middle of the keyboard to use mouse
